Proton Drive Now Supports Spreadsheets!

On Thursday, proton dropped a bombshell announcement: Spreadsheets are now available. This is huge! Many privacy-first companies have been waiting for this to switch to Proton Docs.

Load Times

While understandable creating and loading a spreadsheet takes a tad longer than on Google Drive or M365, it’s well within the tolerable time and the Proton engineers did a great job at optimizing the loading times.

Features

Most features that you expect from an online office suite are there. Collaborative editing shows which user is editing which cell in real time - nothing unexpected here.

The UI is intuitive to use and import of existing sheets works, although we did notice that OpenDocument Sheets is not a supported format (yet?). Excel import works great even with more complex documents that feature a dozen and more sheets.

While ODS is not support, both CSV and Tab-Separated csv sheet imports are supported.

Document Sharing

This is a big one for teams. Sharing works, and even sharing for reading or editing by public link is supported. Kudos for giving the option to not leak the document title in notification emails, although if your emails are staying on ProtonMail you shouldn’t have much to fear.

Document Invitation Email from Proton

When inviting a person to view or edit a document, an email is dispatched to them with the file’s link. If that person does not have Proton Drive enabled on that email yet, they’ll need to create an account first.

Note that when using “Public Links” to share a document without requirement the other party to have or create a Proton Drive account, the document history is not available to users of public links.

Version history is a profile setting defaulting to 180 days and subject to available cloud storage on your profile.
