Proton Authenticator with Cross-Device Synchronization
A new Authenticator App is in town. Normally not a newsworthy item but the game changer here is the cross-device portability, which is often a usability pain point for people with multiple devices (e.g. phone, laptop, desktop.)
Because Proton Authenticator also comes from a time-proven reliable source, is open-source and is thus fully auditable it gets our endorsement.
Proton Authenticator also syncs to your laptop/desktop
Authenticators are the apps on your phone that generate a six digit code for 2 Factor Authentication. So authentication is not just limited to what you know but also what you possess. Authenticator codes are much more secure than text messages that come unencrypted and that the carriers can thus easily intercept and don’t rely on a cell-connection as they work fully offline.
Do I need to switch?
Not necessarily: You can switch, you can stay or your can even use both to compare. The mainstream authenticator apps are certainly not bad, but switching to Proton Authenticator comes with the benefit of secure cross-device synchronization from a provider that depends on security as their business model. If you decide to temporarily use both to compare, remember to add all future services to both apps too. You don’t need to do anything except deleting the app you like least to stop using it and the other will keep working as-is.
Contact us today and we'll gladly assist on migrations from Google or Microsoft Authenticator over to Proton.
